Is nursing a human science? Is the work of the advanced practice nurse inex-tricably interwoven with the population served? When nurses speak of patients and families in one breath, is this a function of a human science view or of some-thing else? For nursing to be a human science, nurses must recognize themselves as scientists. Evidence-based practice is foundational to undergraduate and graduate nursing education and is a way for the nursing discipline to minimize the theory to practice gap. This article discusses the concept of evidence-based practice from a historical perspective as it relates to nursing in the educational and practice domains.
